Due to the large number of students in this course, we are not able to extend the deadlines. If you miss a deadline you will not be able to qualify for a Certificate of Completion or university credit; however, you are still able to use all of the tools and resources to implement a Roots & Shoots Service Campaign with your young people.
The course will last for five weeks.
The time commitment each week will vary, but a good estimate is to plan to spend about 5 hours a week on the lessons and activities.
Roots & Shoots has been used in every single grade and subject matter (even physical education!). We have adaptations of our resources for younger children and the types of R&S campaigns that you develop will vary based on the age and abilities of your young people.
The course will guide you towards identifying your own project that meets the needs of your specific community! Make sure to join the Roots & Shoots network by signing up for a free membership on RootsandShoots.org! We are here to help you along the way!
Everyone who completes all the required elements of the course with
an average score of 80% (UPDATE: You have to score a minimum of an 80% on each quiz, you can retake the quizzes to achieve a higher score. You will only see a new score when you score higher as the system only keeps track of your highest score) will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion from the Jane Goodall Institute. The required elements are:
- Sample Campaign Plan Submission - Due by July 25, 2016 at midnight ET (4 am UTC)
- One Peer Review Completed - Due by July 31, 2016 at midnight ET (4 am UTC)

You submit your Sample Campaign Plan by clicking on Sample Campaign Plan in the syllabus on the homepage or on the
Syllabus page. The Sample Campaign Plan is set up as a series of short answer questions for you to fill in, with a Submit button at the bottom.
Once you submit your Sample Campaign Plan you cannot make any changes. Sharing your Sample Campaign Plan on the Forum does not count as submitting it.
Please note that you cannot save a draft of your Sample Campaign Plan, if you would like to see the questions beforehand so you can think about your responses, please use this document as a reference. You could even write out your responses and then copy & paste them into the answer text boxes.
You must be logged in to access the Sample Campaign Plan Submission to Submit your responses. If the Submit button is grayed out, it is likely because you have lost your internet connection or you have been logged out. If you log out of your Google Account or switch Google Accounts in another tab/window, you will be logged out of the course and you will see the Submit button greyed out. When you log back in, you will lose your work, so please be careful to remain logged in while you work on your Sample Campaign Plan.
You don’t need to already have a campaign in progress in order to do this exercise. Refer back to your community map and this week’s lessons to identify a potential campaign and then use this to draft out a mock campaign and project plan for an issue you’ve identified on your community map.
None of the response fields are required, but to get the most out of this exercise and to get quality peer feedback it is best to fill in a response in each of the fields.
There is no required length and the boxes will expand based on how much text you enter. Please feel free to write as much or as little in order to convey your Campaign and Project Plan.
Your Sample Campaign Plan must be submitted by Monday, July 25 at midnight ET (4 am UTC).
You have to complete at least one Peer Review by Sunday, July 31 at midnight ET (4 am UTC).
Because of the way the system assigns the Peer Review, we cannot extend the deadline for the Sample Campaign Plan.
You will be able to retrieve a Sample Campaign Plan to review after you have submitted your Sample Campaign Plan. After submitting, if you return to the Syllabus on the course homepage you will see that Review Peer Assignments is now a hyperlink. You can click on this to enter the Review Dashboard.
If Review Peer Assignments is not a link (and you are logged into the course site), then you did not successfully submit your Sample Campaign Plan. Please look at the FAQs above to see if you can find a solution here, or email us at rsonlinelearning@janegoodall.org.
You will
NOT be notified when it’s time for you to review a Sample Campaign Plan, you must click on the Review Peer Assignments link and then the Review New Assignment button to have a Sample Campaign Plan assigned to you for review.
However, you will have until July 31 at midnight ET to complete your one required peer review.
If you are unable to participate in the peer review portion you will not get credit for this portion of the course, which is required for the Certification of Completion and for the graduate university credit.
To view the Peer Assessments for your Sample Campaign Plan simply return to your Sample Campaign Plan Submission, and scroll down to the bottom to see any reviews submitted for your plan. Everyone will have at least one review, some people may have additional reviews depending on how many people complete more than one review.
Please remember that everyone has until Sunday, July 31 at midnight ET to submit their reviews, so there is no reason for concern if you don’t see a review prior to the deadline. Also, in the rare chance that you don’t get a review this does not impact your ability to get a Certificate of Completion or graduate university credit.
